Chris Lavelle
Prior to her Pilates passion, Chris had an academic career in Systems Science and Social Ecology. Graduating with Honours and the University Medal from The University of Western Sydney(Hawkesbury), Chris was seconded to the Philippines on an Australian Government Development program. She worked on the faculty of Silliman University (Philippines) for two years and then returned to the University of Western Sydney where she worked as a lecturer and in consultancy/research for several years.
Although seemingly unrelated to Pilates , the paradigms of Systems Science and Experiential learning that defined Chris's academic career, set her in pursuit of a balanced and conscious approach to her own evolution.
After leaving academia, Chris studied human movement and began performing with amateur dance group "Bricolage",under the tutelage of modern Dancer, Annetta Luce and Mind Body Centring practitioner, Alice Cummins. In 1995, she was recommended to Cynthia Lochard's
Pilates Studio after tearing her intercostal muscles dancing. Chris attended Cynthia's studio three times a week for Private classes and was very excited about this strange new movement vocabulary and the strength that quickly developed in her hyper-mobile body!Chris continued her classes for nearly a year before beginning an apprenticeship training programme with Cynthia.
In 1996 Chris participated in the first ever Australian workshop run by Romana at Cynthia's studio in Leichhardt. After a two year apprenticeship with Cynthia (which included seminars with Romana and Sari in Australia) she travelled to New York and spent over 7 months working alongside Romana and Sari in Dragoes gymnasium (now known as TRUE Pilates New York). During this time she also worked at Brooke Siler's down town studio "Re-Ab" and at a Physical Therapy studio, teaching Pilates as an adjunct to there rehabilitation programs.
Chris returned to Australia in 1999 and opened Powerhouse Personal Training in Balmain with another instructor. Over the next few years, she worked informally with RP apprentices who where sent to complete observation hours in her studio. In 2004 she was granted Level 4 instructor status. After the birth of her daughter in 2007, she continues to teach to a loyal client base in Balmain. Chris has written numerous unpublished papers on specific aspects of Pilates and now runs annual workshops for certified instructors.
Throughout her Pilates career, Chris has continued to explore Joseph Pilates deeper ideals of a balanced body/mind/spirit . She maintains a strong belief that instructors need to nurture this delicate balance with independent research, disciplined personal practice and an on going commitment to classes from other instructors. Sixteen years on from her first
Pilates class, she still attends a weekly class with Cynthia Lochard at the Pilates Method Studio in Surry Hills.

Luke Cook
Luke is a teacher and practitioner of PIlates with 7years experience as a Level 5 Romana's Pilates instructor. During that time he has worked at Cynthia Lochard's Pilates Method Studio and gradually developed his own clients working from his home studio in Elizabeth Bay. He uses Pilates as his primary source of conditioning.
He is currently completing a Post-Graduate degree in Sports Coaching and aspires to use this knowledge to deepen his understanding of the work and to promote healthy discussion and research into how movement affects people physically and mentally. Luke remains a lifelong student of Pilates and admits that the more he learns about it, the less he knows!
WORKSHOP FOUR:
Pilates for Men - Special considerations for Instructors
OBJECTIVES:
“As you all know, Joseph Pilates was a man (duh!), and developed this work on his own body and other men. This has implications for instructors and as well as clients. It is important that we have a clear understanding of the goals of the work, especially some of the more advanced exercises, which seem to be better suited to a male body. In addition to this, for better or worse, Pilates remains a female-dominated exercise arena. What strategies can you employ as a teacher to motivate or entice more men to come on board? I will offer some answers, insight and knowledge and give you a good workout to boot.” -Luke
From 1:00pm till 3:00pm
Cost: $80.00 (includes GST)
